The attempt to establish a permanent museum in Stuttgart extended from 1954 to the early 1960s. The museum was to have been an outgrowth of the Gesellschaft für Weltraumforschung, founded in Stuttgart in 1948. Both the museum and its predecessor were members of the International Astronautical Federation.
